The upcoming California election in November will decide the fate of online wagering. A proposal to authorize online gaming in the Golden State has been officially placed on the ballot. This proposal has garnered support from many commercial operators, but has faced resistance from numerous tribal groups within the state.

The California Secretary of State revealed on Monday that the proposal, supported by prominent gambling entities such as BetMGM, has secured over 1.1 million valid signatures, surpassing the required threshold of 997,000 to qualify for the ballot.

The news of the proposal’s inclusion on the ballot has been met with opposition from tribal gaming entities. These tribal gaming groups have their own initiative, known as the “Tribal Sports Wagering Act,” which has been approved for the November ballot. This initiative would legalize sports wagering in limited locations, including tribal casinos.

“We are committed to running a robust campaign against this measure and are confident that voters will recognize the deceptive promises made by these out-of-state gambling companies,” stated Cody Martinez, chairman of the Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Indians.
