The Spanish Department of Consumer Affairs is requesting that research organizations apply for €1.6 million ( £1.4 million / $1.8 million) in financial support to investigate the effects of gambling-related damage.

The announcement, published in the Official State Gazette, encourages public universities, university institutes and associated organizations, as well as public health entities linked to the National Health System to submit proposals.

Applicants must present a project outline for evaluation. Non-profit organizations are also eligible to apply, but if they receive funding, they must declare that their goal is to conduct research.

The funded research must concentrate on early identification of gambling-related harmful behaviors and the negative consequences associated with problem gambling, as well as its impact on individuals, families and social standing. The research should also explore ways to reduce the stigma surrounding gambling-related harm and examine the gender-specific impact of harm.

Organizations associated with lotteries, poker, gambling and betting are also encouraged to participate.

The application deadline is May 19th. Interested institutions must submit their projects through the Spanish gambling regulator, the General Directorate for Gambling Regulation (DGOJ).
